Long Term Follow-up to WHI Study Proves Lower Breast Cancer Risk
Published: 31st July 2020
A new, important study has just been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) which is the most widely circulated medical journal in the world.
This study has shown that women who have had a hysterectomy and take oestrogen only HRT for more than 20 years had a LOWER risk of developing breast cancer and a LOWER risk of dying from breast cancer compared to women not taking HRT. Dr Louise Newson says that after a hysterectomy, the majority of women should take HRT as there are numerous long-term health benefits that come with replacing oestrogen, including a lower risk of developing heart disease, diabetes, obesity, depression and dementia. Lowering future risk of breast cancer is another advantage.
The new study also shows that there is a small increased risk of developing breast cancer in women who take oestrogen with a synthetic progestogen – but there is no increased risk of death from breast cancer. However, the risk is lower (if at all) for women who take oestrogen with micronised progesterone.
Speaking about the study, Dr Newson said; “I really hope the media and the MHRA read and report on this study. Women deserve to be told the truth about HRT.”
